Move Well

Strive for Consistency: Showing up is most of the battle.

Don’t just exercise: Enjoy what you’re doing.

Be Better Together: Grab a friend - we were created to be social .

You are wonderfully made.

Never let someone else’s abilities undermine the amazing things you can do.

Don’t exercise - move with purpose.

Celebrate what you can do now, the ability to improve, the grace to start over and each triumph along the way.

Basics to get you started

  1. Focus on small goals.

Making big changes all at once often just sets us up for falling. Instead, choose one manageable goal (like a short walk daily or stretching each morning) and then build upon the momentum you gain from those successes. Keeping your goals focused helps prevent feeling overwhelmed by expectations and to consistently make movement part of your day. Check out this Basic Intro to gain strength, confidence and wellness.

  2. Add fun to your day.

Movement of any kind is a gift. Rather than setting any specific benchmarks for yourself, start by getting back in touch with your inner child. Without prompting, children will wonder off sidewalks, up stairs or anywhere else their curiosity takes them. Adding fun into your day can take you down aisles just to look, literally off the beaten path at your lunch break or even on new trails exploring on your day off. If you hear a song you like, turn it up and dance like nobody is watching. Walk out of your way to touch a tree or help someone carry their groceries. Movement, fun and joy and go hand in hand if you look for opportunities that move you out of your ordinary pace and redundant path.

  3. Recruit a friend or ask for help.

Rather than go it alone, get a friend, college or even one of your children to join you. Take a walk on a pretty day. Join a class together. Learn a dance. Collect flowers or rocks. Volunteer at a local organization, hospital or nursing home. Whatever you enjoy doing or want to learn to do, can become a means of sharing an experience with others and adding movement and enjoyment to your day and theirs alike.
